March was a hectic month as far as work goes, unfortunately I did not have time to work on my own projects. This month I hope to be more productive and more consistent. I have already started washing my oils in preparation for traditional oil painting and will be documenting my experience with the whole process on this site.

After meditating and receiving some encouraging words from friends I realize that I have accomplished a lot especially in this economy. Maybe I was being to hard on myself, but I will focus on changing that and just draw because I love it, design for the love and enjoy the ride of life. Below are some quick sketches that were done in about 10 – 15 minutes witch charcoal on newsprint.

Depression hit me like a rock when I realized that today is my birthday and I still have not accomplished my goals. I feel as though that no matter how hard I work and practice I will never reach a point were I will be happy. Don’t get me wrong I am grateful and thankful for what I have and how far I have come, but I still need to work harder.

Last month I purchased a used copy of ‘Drawing The Human Head’ by Burne Hogarth in an effort to not only read the whole book but to also study the drawings inside. With a small piece of charcoal in one hand and the book in the other I began to read and sketch each page for a couple of hours everyday after work.

Today I was thinking about the first time I sat down with Alex and talked about wanting to learn how to paint. We talked for a couple of hours about art and the old masters, well he talked and I listened. But one of the things that he said to me, that a master had once told to him, was that I was like an empty trash can.

A few months ago Alex Castro re-introduced me to charcoal. When he mentioned that it would be one of the main mediums I would be learning in my pursuit to be a great painter, I smiled and nodded but in the back of my mind I was scared.

Hello World, my name is John Santiago and welcome to my Blog. I am a freelance motion designer with a passion for fine art. Funny, I spent five years not drawing, or animating as art was literally the furthest thing from my mind. Due to the shift in the economy (losing my job) I gained the opportunity to reignite my creative skills and return to school where I studied design, and action-script programming.
